The Reason the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

The move by the Democratic National Committee to withhold the publication of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race appears remarkable yet to be expected. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the DNC often functions closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building local power for winning elections.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed under the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Publishing an official autopsy would have indicated that party leaders are interested to promote open debate about the errors which allowed the former president to become president again. However, the leadership is moving forward as if there are no lessons to be learned from the tragic debacle of 2024.

Our guiding principle: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the report.

Critical Problems a Report Could Have Addressed

An autopsy report of substance would confront certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Voter Alienation: The loss of a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal in the close recent race.
  • The Insistence to Run: The stubborn choice by the incumbent to run again, alongside a last-minute step-aside, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: During a time of rising costs, the campaign reportedly ceding to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to address the impact of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: An unwillingness to shift an approach concerning the situation in Gaza is cited as alienating many voters, notably with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • Losing Young Voter Support: Polling data shows a major decline of support for the party among voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern Avoiding Accountability

The decision to withhold fits a pattern to avoid difficult realities. It recalls a situation in which virtually every elected Democrat in Congress supported an incumbent's decision for seeking another term until a disastrous televised debate compelled a reversal.

Concurrently, large majorities within the party's base were continually telling researchers that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Concerns

A thorough analysis could investigate issues regarding campaign spending, including what sums were directed to insider consultants as well as advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a colossal amount during the general election.

The Broader Issue

At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a deference to party leaders who engineered a losing national race. The implication for rank-and-file members – including countless loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot have a right to see the lessons party chiefs have learned from hundreds of interviews compiled from conversations with insiders.

A political entity incapable to publicly examine its mistakes finds it difficult to climb out of the cycle which was so beneficial to their opponents.
